Captain Mundalamo, (Family violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit) said on Friday, children should be bold enough to report cases of rape to the police station.

Speaking at Bophelong Sports ground in Akani school, Diepsloot, Mundalamo said Children must not be afraid to report any one who abuses them.

“Children are afraid to report cases of rape, listen if someone touches your body in a sexual manner, you must report him to the nearest police station.”

He said children must not be afraid to report their family members to the police.

“Don’t be afraid to report people you know to the police station, cause that thing will grow old with you.” Mundalamo said.

“I tell you if you report someone who sexually harass you that thing will grow with you.”

Detective Masemola, from Joburg West, said children are vulnerable and cannot protect themselves, she also urged the community and teachers to help protect the children as well.

“Children you must report any act of sexual harassment to the teachers, and remember rape is not only when a man penetrates your vagina, a rape can also be when a boy uses a pen or pencil into your vagina. That is classified as rape as well.” She said.

Masemola said children must not keep quite if anybody abuses them.

“Don’t keep quite if anybody is abusing you, if there’s someone who abused a long time ago and you still remember, you can report him, we’ll make the investigations and the truth will come out.”

Other issues discussed were cases of children raped by their relatives like uncles, brothers and fathers including friends and neighbours.

Kennel Mukhalipha said parents needed to instil proper discipline in their homes and that children should listen to their parents at all times.

“For a problem to be in the child it started from their parents, parents should not protect their children when they are wrong, instead they should discipline them.” Concluded Mukhalipha strongly.
