The department of Home Affairs has taken a disciplinary action against a home affairs’ official, who was found preoccupied with a cell phone while on duty, Wednesday at Beitbridge port of entry. A letter said on Thursday.

This comes after Minister of Home affairs Malusi Gigaba reacted to a video clip on twitter that showed a home affairs official busy with Facebook while performing her duties.

The minister asked the department to investigate the matter and act against the official.

“I was this morning informed about the video circulating on social media platforms, and have asked the Department of Home Affairs to investigate this matter and take swift action against the official.” Wrote the minister.

The department issued a letter on twitter showing their concern regarding the official and confirmed that the official is stationed at Beitbridge port of entry.

“The department of home affairs has taken note of a video clip which depicts an official seemingly preoccupied with her cellular phone while at work.”

“The department can confirm that the official is stationed at the Beitbridge port of entry.

On the letter the home affairs said the official will be subjected to the internal disciplinary hearing and have put the blame on three supervisors who were on duty that day, saying they lacked adequate supervision.

“The official has been identified and she will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes, further to this, disciplinary measures have commenced against three supervisors on the shift for lack of adequate supervision.

Director General Mkuseli Apleni has expressed his disappointment at the lack of attention to the duty performed by this official saying she violated the policy against the use of cell phones in a work station.

“Of major concern to me is the fact that the official is dealing with the security documents without paying attention to detail and rather preoccupied with a cellular phone.”

“To this end, we have commenced with disciplinary measures against the official and the three supervisors.”
